At Hydrogen Technology World Expo 2026 in Hamburg, the Fraunhofer accompanying research project HySecunda will present key results from several years of research and development aimed at building a high-performing, safe, and competitive hydrogen economy. From October 20 to 22, 2026, the event will highlight the work of nine Fraunhofer Institutes, which are collaborating with partners from industry, research, and education through the end of 2026 to develop practical solutions along the value chain for green hydrogen and its derivatives. A particular focus is on South Africa and the SADC region. In Hamburg, visitors will be able to see what this collaboration has achieved.

The training programmes ‘Practical Knowledge for Hydrogen Projects’, developed and successfully piloted as part of the HySecunda project, will launch in 2027. Work with Fraunhofer to expand your expertise in the fields of hydrogen production and Power-to-X, and choose the format that best suits your learning needs.

How can countries in southern Africa become key players in the global trade in green hydrogen? And what role do sustainability and certification requirements in importing countries play in this process? A new whitepaper published by the HySecunda project provides a first systematic analysis of how differing power to x (PtX) certification requirements influence the ramp up of hydrogen and synthetic fuel export markets from the SADC region – and why strategic decisions already in early project phases are crucial.

From 18 to 20 November 2025, the joint Fraunhofer–HySA Infrastructure Matchmaking Workshop took place in Krugersdorp / Muldersdrift, South Africa, bringing together leading representatives from research, industry, and government. The event provided a focused platform for exchange on green hydrogen and renewable energy technologies and strengthened collaboration between German and South African partners.
