New White Paper: Navigating PtX Certification Challenges: Qualitative Assessment of Sustainability Requirements and Cost Dynamics for Exports from the SADC-region

How can countries in southern Africa become key players in the global trade in green hydrogen? And what role do sustainability and certification requirements in importing countries play in this process? A new whitepaper published by the HySecunda project provides a first systematic analysis of how differing power to x (PtX) certification requirements influence the ramp up of hydrogen and synthetic fuel export markets from the SADC region – and why strategic decisions already in early project phases are crucial.

The white paper published by the Hysecunda project provides a first systematic analysis on PtX certification challenges in the SADC region.

The white paper was jointly written by Fraunhofer Institutes IEE, ISI, IEG, and IMWS. To launch the publication, two webinars were held to examine and discuss the content and key messages in greater detail.

During the Q&A Sessions, details of the REDIII sustainability criteria were discussed, as well as differences and possible competition between import markets, among other things.

Key findings of the white paper:

  • PtX sustainability criteria differ between potential import regions for the SADC region.
  • Regional differences in certification require early decision on export markets from PtX production hubs.
  • Sustainability criteria can have an impact on PtX system design and levelized cost of PtX production systems.
